Sok Klab!

There is an element in this fight which the advanced guys trained with Kru Jen last night, though it was practiced with different set up. Here, you can see a high risk, high reward outcome. In cases like these, timing and good foot work are essential for offsetting the amount of risk (which is why we drill basic tech waaaay more than this stuff).

A War in the Ring

Sent in by one of our students...and there's a couple things you will notice:

The tide in this fight turns more than once. There is more than one moment where it seems like either guy is going to win by a huge KO.

A major factor in this is loose technique. Now hold on...don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to criticize guys who are fighting at a higher level than myself. What I'm getting at is that they aren't being damaged because one guy is smarter or stronger than the other. They are being damaged because of low guards, off hands that aren't protecting and chins that are raised. When you're going 100% in a real fight, it is very hard to control these things.

Whether it is the moving target, emotion or just pressure from the incredible amount of stimuli: form is incredibly hard to maintain in a real and spontaneous situation. Even the absolute best in the world aren't able to keep their form tight all the time. If they did, they would never lose or get hit.

This is why training very hard, but also paying attention to basic form is so important. The more you are used to throwing full power, as well as staying aware of what you're body is doing, the greater chance you will have of retaining that form when things get real.

Andrei Kulebin vs Singmanee Kaewsamrit (video)

Interesting fight sent in by Roman.

It is a very technical bout with an even pace. Check it out and think on a few things...

As the fight goes on, Andrei establishes control of the ring space, moving forward and keeping Singmanee on the ropes with strong strikes and consistent footwork. Singmanee however isn't simply being bullied backwards- he's using his timing and techniques to counter and pick Andrei off. Because he's on the ropes, Andrei is forced to come to him, and so he uses the opportunities to strike.

The question is...who was more effective? What do you think? Do you agree with the judges?

Roman also found this a good example of the Thai footwork/ weight shifting that the students worked on in Kru Jen's Monday night training.

PS. My questions are not necessarily because I disagree with the judges. I'm inviting you to not just passively watch the fight, but try and form your own understanding of it.

Southpaw Showdown: Yodsanklai vs Sam-A (videos)

Ah....Yodsanklai vs Sam-A.   I had no idea this ever happened until now.

Yodsanklai went on to become one of the most famous middleweight (160 lbs) fighters in the world. With his cracking left kick and bomb left cross, he was either battering people for 5 straight rounds or knocking them out. Aside from his power, he is also known for his patience and timing. Yod has become a household name for his international successes including winning the Contender Asia reality TV series tournament.

Sam-A is one of the top fighters in today in Thailand's circuit. However, he has stayed in at feather weight (126 lbs), which doesn't make it any easier for him as this is the most competitive weight in the country. Unless you follow Thai fighters, you probably haven't heard of him. At 126 lbs, there aren't a ton of international matches being made for him. However, Sam-A also has a strong left kick, but it's the speed of it that is insane. This guy can kick full power several times in a second. This may seem par for the course for a Thai, but Sam-A is one of the best at what he does.

Anyways, I got a little carried away with the background info. I suppose it explains the fan boy perspective I have from seeing these two actually fight. Enjoy the video.
