YMT watching (streaming) Matt vs Lerdsila THIS Saturday!

Don't forget YMT: we are streaming Matt Embree vs Lerdsila on Saturday! An amazing fight between our local world champ from Siam no 1 and one of Thailand's top fighters. Come out and support. 5$ cover, and a good time :)

Friday Fight Video: Wangchannoi vs Namkabuan II (video)

Beautiful and exciting fight from the "golden era"! Wangjannoi earned a rep as the 33 sec killer, after a famous KO he pulled off, while Namkabuan was one of the most dynamic fighters of the century.

Right from the get go till round 5, it's elbows and kicks flying!  Something for the fighters to pay attention to is the stability in both guys. They have solid footwork/balance, so they are always able to throw whatever they want, whenever they want, as hard as they want.

"Keep Up" - Boonlai vs Chatchai (video)

This is a great fight between two legends for the Lumpinee featherweight belt. One of the reasons it's so fun to watch is also one of characteristics that define Muay Thai in general: these guys don't let their opponent have any free shots. They are always playing keep up. Boonlai scores a big kick, Chatchai responds back right away. Chatchai nails him with a knee, Boonlai returns with his own bomb technique. They don't wait either. They are so solid with their stance/footwork that they can strike back very quickly at full force.

In some MT fights, the difference between a win and a loss can be as close as missing a strike, or not being the last one to land in an exchange. This actually happened once in  Lumpinee between Saenchai and Neungsiam. Saenchai just edged Neungsiam out on points because Neungsiam wasn't able to land one kick. Otherwise, the fight might have been a draw.

"Keep up" is an important concept on Muay Thai. Sometimes you'll hear it called "fair trade." Whatever you call it, it's all about giving back whatever you took, and MORE.

Boonlai and Chatchai have an amazing fight because neither wants to give less than they took.

Throwin Knees and Elbows! Karuhat vs Lamnamoon (video)

Here is an old fight between two of the best at the time. Karuhat was pretty much a well rounded genius, with amazing technique and movement. Lamnamoon was known for have some of the best straight knees in the game. I had no idea they had even fought till I came by this video.Karuhat seemed intent on shutting down Lamnamoon early, who looked like he needed time to get his range.

Anyways, this one is full of elbows and knees. It will be impossible to get bored watching. Enjoy!

Some Highlights (videos)

Highlights are a fun way to get into watching a sport. If you don't know what a highlight is, it's basically a mash up of the "greatest hits" of a fighter, or a sport. It's all the best "wow that was awesome" moments put together.

I think with Muay Thai in particular, it is a great tool for showing off the highest levels of the sport. Everybody knows what striking in MMA looks like, but a Muay Thai highlight of a top ranked MT fighter gives a really great glimpse of the best that the 8 weapons have to offer. If you don't watch a lot of Muay Thai, this is one way to get started.

Sometimes highlights can be great for providing motivation too.

Here are some really well put together highlight reels of top Thai talent. I'll bet that many of you have probably never heard of any of these guys. Now you have.

Matt Embree to Fight Lerdsila at World Stand Off! August 18th!

You may remember me posting Lerdsila on this blog before. He's what I called a fun alternative to Saenchai, for those of you who enjoy watching unorthodox fighters. He's like a ghost, with the ability to slip and evade techniques with precision, and then fire back with his own.

As the blog title says, Toronto's own Matt Embree will be taking on Lerdsila in a Thailand vs the Americas event.

Like many of the other North Americans, Matt is being seen as the underdog in this fight. He, like his fellow N-Americans, will be fighting an opponent with much more experience.

However, if anyone has the style to beat Lerdsila in North America, let alone the world outside of Thailand, it's Matt. With a strong and smart style, Matt will make for an interesting match up with Lerdsila. He isn't a wild head hunter or someone to try and play too many tricks. I'll be willing to bet that his calculated style will serve him well in the bout. Matt's also no slouch on covering the MT scene. He knows the top guys in the game, and will be expecting Lerdsila's antics.

In the end, this will still be a great step up for Matt, and a very good challenge. He will be mixing it up with one of the best in the world, so fireworks will be a must. We at YMT wish him the best!

In the spirit of the event, here are two videos, so you can see both fighters in action:

I'm sure I posted this at least once, but here is one of the slickest fights in MT history. It unfolds like an action movie. All 8 weapons in effect. Both fighters also showcase some pretty good balance and movement. A great watch!
